The Project observed that female journalists are increasingly facing a double burden of attacks based on the profession and gender as a result of being journalists and women. These attacks present both in the physical and online spaces within which they execute their duties and are perpetrated by both media colleagues, duty bearers/powerful figures, sources and general public.
Male dominance, a persisting gender gap in media content
The 2020 GMMP report released by UMWA observed that there was a low women visibility in news media, only at 24% as news sources and subjects compared to their male counterparts. And yet, only achieved at a 6% rate over a ten year-period of time and a staggering progress as of the March-June 2022 gender responsive media monitoring engagements.
