The Uganda Media Women’s Association (UMWA) has issued a strong statement condemning the closure of Nation Media Group Uganda (NMG-U) media platforms, describing the action as a serious threat to press freedom, access to information, and Uganda’s democratic principles.
The association expresses concern over the impact of the shutdown on journalists, media workers, and the public’s constitutional right to receive diverse and credible information. UMWA also highlights the potential loss of livelihoods for hundreds of media professionals and emphasizes the importance of protecting independent journalism as a cornerstone of democracy, accountability, and social justice.
In its statement, UMWA calls upon the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), the Ministry of ICT and National Guidance, and other relevant authorities to pursue a swift, transparent, and lawful resolution of the matter. The association further urges all stakeholders to engage in constructive dialogue, uphold constitutional guarantees of freedom of expression, and ensure that any concerns regarding media operations are addressed through due legal process.
UMWA also appeals to civil society, media rights organizations, and the public to stand in solidarity with journalists and defend media independence while promoting an environment where disputes are resolved through dialogue rather than censorship.
